Growth Mindset: Where Are We Now & Where Are We Going?

The rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic made the past couple months incredibly hectic for law firm and business owners across the country: Everyone has been focused on full-blown damage control just trying to keep their operations afloat.

Now, as the tone is shifting toward what states and the economy reopening will look like, law firms need to start thinking ahead about how your practice will adjust.

In the latest Law Firm Leadership Collaboration Circle, our panel of legal industry experts discussed employing a “growth mindset” and how we can adapt business practices from the old and new normal.

Social Engagement In A Post-COVID World

Social distancing requirements have likely forced a number of changes in how your law firm operates, including many that can continue to be implemented even after the COVID-19 crisis is under control (think increased use of video conferencing and cutting out commute times).

However, now that we have become accustomed to working from home, it’s easy to look back and find many benefits to an office environment that we may have taken for granted.

For example, although technology has made it entirely possible to continue operations with a remote workforce, there’s something missing by not having the whole team in one place: The daily interactions, the ease of collaboration, the ability to go to a happy hour after a long day or take clients out to lunch.

It will be important to make an extra effort to take advantage of those opportunities instead of continuing the new routine we have become accustomed to once we are able to have face-to-face interactions again.

Adversity Breeds Success

While the COVID-19 crisis has brought about sweeping changes for everyone in both their personal and professional lives, how we handle the adversity and preserve makes a big difference.

Finding ways to continue to find success during these challenging times is difficult, but continuing to move forward while juggling new obstacles in our personal and professional lives can actually benefit us in the future.

“You should never view your challenges as a disadvantage. Instead, it’s important for you to understand that your experience facing and overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages.”

This quote from Michelle Obama is extremely relevant in these trying times.

Each individual is dealing with different levels of adversity from COVID-19. However, it’s important for everyone to take the mentality that helped you succeed over the past few months and apply the lessons you learned to problems further down the line.

Even something as simple as being open to learning new technology or having a more flexible attitude is a positive you can take out of this global crisis that can be applied to challenges that lie ahead.

Attorneys Often Lack An Abundance Mindset

Attention Lawyers: There will be plenty of work to go around!

The legal industry often lacks an abundance mentality, which is the belief that there is plenty for everyone. Instead, we all too often fall into a scarcity mentality, where we feel the need to claw and fight for every case.

While law firms in the same practice areas and geographic region are certainly competing for business, the fact of the matter is there are plenty of cases to go around.

COVID-19 has caused a fight response for many as we all scrape to get through this, often exasperating the scarcity mentality.

Taking a step back and realizing the work will be there and that there’s enough for everyone helps reduce some of that unnecessary stress.
